Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Which to Choose?

Sharing is caring!

Would it really be a trip to the Caribbean without traveling to a beautiful island to explore and see what there is to offer? In this article, we are going to compare the two of the most popular islands in the Mayan Riviera: Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel.

Both islands are picturesque offering an abundance of activities and enjoyment for all types of travelers. When it comes to comparing the two islands, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are completely different.

In this article, you will learn about each island’s amazing qualities and why you should visit each of them.

So the question at hand is Isla Mujeres or Cozumel?

I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time on each island to get to know them quite well. I do have my personal favorite but I will reveal that answer to you at the end of this article.

Both islands are surrounded by the gorgeous blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, with soft sandy beaches and palm tree-lined shores.

On both islands, you will find an abundance of shopping, restaurants, water attractions, and excursions. Each has its own vibe and sense of culture, completely different from the other.

Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are both small islands but Isla Mujeres is much smaller in size. Depending on your travel preferences, style, and budget will determine what is the best island for you.

The great news is that if you are staying on the mainland in Playa del Carmen or Cancun, these two islands are only a short ferry ride away. If your schedule allows it is super easy to hop on the ferry and do a day trip to both islands.

For me, I love to spend a couple of nights on the each island to completely relax, unwind, and explore.

Now let’s get into the information on what each island has to offer.

When trying to decide on Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel, which island has the better beaches? We think Cozumel wins for the variety available on this larger island, but Isla Mujeres (pictured here) still has some pretty spectacular beaches.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Beaches

When it comes to the subject of the Caribbean Sea, you can always expect to admire various shades of turquoise waters lining the shores. White soft sandy beaches with plenty of palm trees for shade. Both islands are home to incredible beaches perfect for relaxing out in the sun.

Isla Mujeres is much smaller in size, therefore it has fewer beaches to offer. But the beaches they have do not lack in beauty. Isla Mujeres is home to Playa Norte which has reached many lists of “best beaches in the world” and with good reason.

The beach at Playa Norte is long and wide with shallow water. Perfect for relaxing or fun water activities. This is a common beach for boats and yachts to drop their anchors and float on the water during the day.

Playa Sol on Isla Mujeres is another beautiful and laid-back beach to escape the business of the tourist crowds and watch the sunset.

For an adventure, you can make your way over to Punta Sur at Isla Mujeres to witness the water breaking up on the rocky shore. There is a man-made path that you can follow which guides you through the rocky edge of the shoreline.

In Cozumel, you will find many different types of beaches around the island. Due to the different sides of Cozumel, you will find lots of different types of beaches. Long sandy beaches, small beach inlets, rocky beaches, and even beaches that have grass.

I personally think Cozumel has the better beaches out of the two islands but that could be because there are more options.

For a laid-back day of relaxing ocean front visit the public beach at Playa Mia. Playa Mia is a beach club in Cozumel but a local tip is that there is a side entrance to the left of the main entrance of the beach club that anybody can access to walk to the beach.

The beach is long with soft sand and beautiful blue waters of the sea. Pack a cooler and your beach blanket and you are set for the day.

Another great beach in Cozumel is called Playa Casitas. This is one of the rocky beaches in Cozumel that has a nice grassy area to relax with shade provided by tall trees.

Because the entrance to the water is rocky it’s nice to have a pair of water shoes to protect your feet. Here the water is calm and shallow, great for wading and chilling out. This is also a great area for snorkeling as there are some lively reefs in the area in front of the beach.

On the east side of the island, a trip to Chen Rio won’t leave you disappointed. The sand here is so soft and powdery and the ocean boasts so many different hues of turquoise. The water is so calm and refreshing.

Pack your beach bag and towel and lounge the day away. There is a small restaurant nearby if you want a cold margarita and a bite to eat.

Isla Mujeres beaches are pretty special, especially if you stay until after sunset when the majority of people head back to Cancun for the evening.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Restaurants

When it comes to Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel on the subject of restaurants it is a tricky debate. Because both islands are tourist hot spots there are many fantastic restaurants catering to all tastebuds.

Again because Isla Mujeres is smaller in size there are fewer restaurants but that does not mean what they have to offer doesn’t lack great flavor.

At the restaurants in Isla Mujeres, you will find everything from 5-star restaurants to mom-and-pop taco shops all serving up quality meals with the majority of the restaurants being in the center of town. It is easy to walk about and find a restaurant that suits your taste buds.

If you have a craving for fresh seafood you are in luck and you won’t want to miss a dinner at Limon. The seafood dishes here are delivered ocean to table with only the freshest seafood being prepared for your meal.

In the mood for a wood-fired pizza? Check out Capricci Pizza Sfizi! They have a great selection of mouth-watering pizzas and classic Italian dishes.

One of my favorite spots for a sweet treat on Isla Mujeres is a little food cart called Churrossik Park.  They offer many different flavors of stuffed churros, with toppings such as strawberry, Nutella, and white chocolate. A must-stop while visiting the island.

Of course, there is no shortage of great restaurants in Cozumel either. You will find some fabulous restaurants in the downtown of Cozumel, along with restaurants located in other parts of the island.

Again fresh seafood is always popular, but you will also find incredible Italian, Asian, and even Indian restaurants on the island.

I know we are talking about Mexico and I should be writing about Mexican food, but one of my absolute favorite restaurants on the island is called New Especias. The owner and chef of the restaurant is from Rome and takes care to keep the finest quality ingredients in his recipes.

For succulent fresh lobster head over to the Lobster House. Here you choose your lobster and pay the weight, and the chef prepares it as you wish. With over 20 years in business, it is easy to understand why the Lobster House is an island favorite.

These are just two of many incredible restaurants in Cozumel. But whatever style of cuisine you are looking for, you are sure to find it there.

The beaches in Cozumel are exceptional and there are a lot of options for boat excursions while you are visiting Cozumel.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Things to Do

Apart from enjoying the beaches and blissful weather, each island offers other unique experiences for you to keep busy. With that being said I feel Cozumel is the winner in this category for all they have to offer.

First lets talk about Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is home to lively and beautiful coral reefs which makes it the perfect destination for snorkeling and scuba diving tours. They even have an underwater museum which is a cool attraction to witness.

Because of its size, you can easily explore the whole of Isla Mujeres in one day. Renting a golf cart and doing a self-guided tour is what Isla Mujeres is known for, not to mention – really fun as well.

Around the Isla Mujeres, there are some fascinating spots to check out, for example, the Ice Bar, Mayan ruins at Punta Sur, and of course a golden sunset at Playa Norte.

Apart from that, Isla Mujeres is more of a place to relax on the beach for the day.

Now let us talk about Cozumel. There are so many things to do in Cozumel it is hard to find yourself without an activity to do.

Number one, Cozumel is a scuba diver’s paradise. Tourists from all over the world come to Cozumel with the sole intention to dive as much as they can while on their trip. Not a diver? Not to worry.

You can find tequila tours, ATV tours, bee farm tours, snorkeling tours, sunset sails, submarine adventures, axe throwing, surfing, kite surfing, and the list goes on. There really is fun for everyone in Cozumel.

One of the best ways to get to know the island is to rent a Jeep or go-kart and do a self-guided tour around the island exploring wherever your heart desires.

You can visit both islands on day trip boats from either Cancun or Playa del Carmen, but to really get to know the islands, spend a few nights to relax and escape the crowds of the bigger resort towns.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Nightlife Scene

When it comes to the nightlife scene in Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, the honest truth is that neither island is known for its wild parties.

Both islands are calm and laid back so if you are looking for a crazy night out Playa del Carmen, Cancun, or Tulum will be the destination for you.

With that being said Isla Mujeres has a small downtown with a few beachfront bars.  Some offer live music where you can dance with a drink in your hand.

Something to keep in mind is that not too many establishments will stay open past 11 pm since most people only come to the island for the day. So be prepared for an earlier night.

On Cozumel, you can find more of a lively downtown with bars, restaurants, and pubs. One thing Cozumel is great for is its live music scene. There are a ton of amazing artists and bands on the island that play at various restaurants on almost all nights of the week.

Right on the Malecon there are a few party clubs that will have DJs playing into the early hours of the morning. Aqui y Ahora and Metropolitan are two places you might hit up if you are looking for a late-night dance party.

There are a lot more hotel options in Cozumel (pictured here), but if you would prefer a smaller place with fewer resorts (and therefore fewer tourists), perhaps Isla Mujeres is the best island for you.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: Accomodation

Where you call your home during your vacation is a very important thing to factor in while making your decision about where to visit. The great news is that both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel have many different options for accommodation that fit all budgets.

Isla Mujeres is known for its small-town feel with a quaint and tranquil atmosphere. For this reason, it is quite easy to find many budget-friendly options like Airbnbs and hostels. If you are looking for something more luxurious and upscale there are a few all-inclusive options on the island.

When it comes to Cozumel, you have quite a large array of accommodation options. From all-inclusive resorts to Airbnb and hostels, there is something to match every traveler’s style.

Spread across the island you will find popular all-inclusive hotel chains such as Secrets, The Westin, and Iberostar

In the center of town, you will find hotels, hostels and Airbnb rentals. If you are looking for budget-friendly options in Cozumel an Airbnb rental might be your best option as standard hotel rooms can run $100 USD and upwards a night.

Out of the two islands, Isla Mujeres is considered more budget-friendly but Cozumel can offer many more hotel options.

Rent a Jeep in Cozumel to explore all of the best beaches, great restaurants, and tucked away things to do on the island. It’s much bigger than Isla Mujeres, so you’ll want a car to get around easily.

Where is the better shopping: Isla Mujeres or Cozumel?

When comparing shopping at Isla Mujeres vs Cozumel, both have their positives and negatives.

Both islands are very touristy so there is no doubt that you can find markets and little shops selling all of your favorite Mexican souvenirs. T-shirts, beach bags, hammocks, magnets, shot glasses, and jewelry are all in abundance on both islands.

On the downside, finding big-ticket shops on either island is slightly more difficult. For big brand-name stores, it is great to make a trip over to Playa del Carmen or Cancun.

When it comes down to shopping for day-to-day items such as clothing and groceries you have many more options on Cozumel.

Isla Mujeres is home to a few local grocery stores called Super Aqui. Here you are sure to find your day-to-day needs, but might be more challenging to find specific or imported items.

Cozumel has more options for big grocery stores including Chedraui, Mega Soriana, and Bodega Aurrera. They even have a Sam’s Club on the island. Imported products are much easier to find as well. This might be due to the amount of expats living on the island.

Cozumel has some brand-name shopping as well like Rip Curl and Miniso with a small cosmetics store that is home to brands like Lancome, Clinique, and Estee Lauder.

Isla Mujeres has a lot to offer people who want to explore good restaurants, interesting ruins, and great beaches.

Isla Mujeres Vs Cozumel: The final Decision

I might be completely biased in my opinion on what island is better but that is because I live in Cozumel.

With that being said I do believe there are more things to do and explore on Cozumel, and after 10 months of living here I can say that I still haven’t become bored.

Cozumel is much bigger, offering so much more than Isla Mujeres.

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxed beach get-away Isla Mujeres could totally be the place for you.

There is no doubt that both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel offer that Carribbean paradise lifestyle, so you might just have to check out both islands to see which one you like better.
